76 Ranch

Now known as Grant, the 76 ranch was founded

by C.L. Hepburn, where he built a log hotel for the mountain travelers. C.L. later sold the 76 Ranch to Leland Peabody, but stayed there to manage the hotel and ranch with his wife Agnes.

At some point around 1870, the Hepburns decided to name the area after General Grant, who was rumored to have passed through the ranch, but probably just named it after him when he became president. Grant eventually grew into a small town and the road conditions improved, opening up Guenella Pass to wagon coaches and connecting Grant to Georgetown. The railroad was built through, and a Grant train depot was built, providing the town with more business and development.
