Charlie Tyler

Homesteader and Pioneer

Charles Tyler homesteaded along the river, 2 miles west of Shawnee and Slaughts. He built a small shack and dug an irrigation ditch to raise a small amount of crops, but mostly used his land to graze cattle. He originally moved to Slaughts from Missouri around 1890. He was a miner and was often away from his homestead to make his living digging through the Rocky Mountain earth. He would come back to work his land just enough to earn it's homestead status, and eventually sold his land to his brother Ben Tyler in 1899. Then Charles moved to Swandyke, and married a young Zoella Coffin. There he had acquired a few successful mining claims and proceeded to start a family, and lived and turbulent and tragic life until he died in 1941 at the age of 81.
