James W. Price
Store Owner/Homesteader/Pioneer
James William Price was an original
homesteader who opened his mercantile store in Slaughts, and sold his merchandise to the prospectors passing through the valley. He homesteaded just west of the Slaughts and Cramer properties, and would later help in the development of Shawnee by moving his store and the post office into town. His store would become a community hub and tourist shop, and remain a staple of the Shawnee community for decades. He raised a family and his daughters were married to the Tyler boys, creating a family of Shawnee pioneers. Price built the Fairview Hotel, another landmark in town, and he participated in the construction of the Denver, Southpark, and Pacific Railroad's Shawnee Lodge. A beautiful rustic lodging space in the northwest corner of Shawnee that burned down in 1929.
