Florence Adams
Historical Figures and Pioneers
Wife of Milward Adams and original owner of Stoneleigh. A brilliant consultant from Chicago, married on August 25th, 1883. Stoneleigh was her summer home, accessible by the Shawnee train depot. She died April 6th, 1910.

Milward Adams
Husband to Florence Adams, builder and original owner of Stoneleigh. Manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Auditorium Theatre. Milward died on January 18th, 1923.


James William Price
Original homesteader and developer of many Shawnee landmarks. He opened his mercantile store in Slaughts, then moved it, along with the Post Office to the Shawnee district, where he built the Grandview Hotel and helped the railroad open the Shawnee Lodge.


Benjamin Tyler
Original homesteader of the Shawnee area. He owned a cabin which he later built additions to. Neighbored by his four brothers, he used his land as a ranch for many years and bought adjacent homesteads increasing the size of his ranch.


Charles Tyler
Original homesteader of the Shawnee area near Ben Tyler Gulch. He dug an irrigation ditch and diverted water from the creek that still exists today. He built a small cabin the was later added onto by Howard Tillman.


Azel Slaught
Azel Slaught was the founder of the town of Slaughts that pre-existed the town of Fairview and Shawnee. He homesteaded the land adjacent to what is now Shawnee, then bought the homesteads of Augustus Curley and Israel Cramer.
