We are happy to announce that Platte Canyon Community Partnership has chosen Shawnee History to receive a grant in 2025. The PCCP Resale Boutique of Bailey, is a wonderful organization that is ran entirely by volunteers, enabling them to give back to the community. They do this by donating their sales profit from the boutique each month to local non profit organizations. In exchange the chosen beneficiaries volunteer at the boutique during their designated month. In the past Shawnee History has recieved $3,000 from our beneficiary months. We encourage all locals to donate and shop at the PCCP Resale Boutique as the money stays in our community and benefits local residents.

As part of the grant application process, we submit a proposal detailing what we intend to use the grant funds on if chosen. This year our grant application had three things we were requesting funds for. One is historical markers. Shawnee History is working on historical markers for the houses, buildings and properties on the historical registry. In addition, we intend to install some informational markers based on important historical events and places in Shawnee's history.

Secondly, we requested funds for an exciting project brought to us from Bill Douthet. In 1860, Park County Colorado had its own currency. A pioneer of the area, Dr. John Parsons, had a mint in his wagon from where he would strike gold coins for Park County miners. Only a handful of these coins exist today, valued at between $200,000-400,000. Impossible for most local history enthusiasts to obtain. Our solution is replicas at an affordable price. The grant will cover the mold and casting of the replica gold coins.

The third component of our grant proposal was seeking funds for equipment for our upcoming podcast studio. In partnership with Conifer Radio, we plan to start a podcast station for the Platte Canyon area. We will have our Shawnee History podcast, enabling us to record and share some very fascinating local history. Our group continually uncovers interesting history about the area that we would love to share. Most importantly, the podcast acts as an archive for our information, preserving it for future historians. There is future potential for the station to grow and encompass more than just History for the community.

The Shawnee History Board of Directors would like to thank all members who volunteered during our 2024 beneficiary month of September. Your volunteer hours were one of the factors in our organization being chosen again for the 2025 year. We cannot do this without your help. Thank you.

If you are interested in any of our upcoming projects or have ideas or suggestions involving them, please reach out to us via email at Shawneehistory@gmail.com. Or come to a meeting, we'd love to hear from you!
